What makes a work of art vital to new generations? What makes Joyces Ulysses so universal that like Homers Odyssey, it's still read devotedly from Melbourne to Buenos Aires, from Kobe to Kansas City?
“Joyce to the World ” explores the global phenomenon of Bloomsday, celebrated every year on June 16th, the day the novel takes place. 2004 marks the centenary of Bloomsday, when Joyceans around the world open a book, raise a pint, dress in costume, and in Dublin, visit the locations at designated times, following the footsteps of their fictional heroes. June 16, 1904 was also the day he met Nora Barnacle, who was to become his wife.
Joyce never lived in Dublin again after 1904, but he infused every word he wrote with a sense of where he had come from. This documentary provides extensive biographical background, affirming Joyces place in literature and Irish history as a brilliant, irreverent emissary of a rich cultural tradition.
