Elizabeth Hates Harvey
An Edgar Allan Poe-inspired comedy about a man's undying love for a mentally unstable woman who is trying to kill him. SYNOPSIS: As children, Harvey and Elizabeth used to play in the cemetery, dismember dolls, and reenact an Edgar Allan Poe story using the blade of a circular saw. Elizabeth's mother felt Elizabeth's participation in these activities warranted institutionalization. Now, 15 years later, Harvey (employed as a butcher in Shop-Rite) springs her from the women's county mental hospital. Frustrated by her years of overmedication, he tries jogging her memory by recreating the demented rituals of their childhood. However, when he writes down one of Poe's love poems, it backfires. She believes he's been fornicating with Annabel Lee. And decides she's going to kill him. Harvey seeks refuge at the dilapidated Full Moon tavern - but then gets his arm stuck in the corner pocket of the pool table. He's stuck there with Pops, the crabby proprietor and a fellow known as Mr. Negativity. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is looking for him-with her brother-in-law Dan's .22. Meanwhile, Colleen and Pam (about to become lesbians by default) try to wrangle and defuse Elizabeth, to no avail. And Stan, Harvey's neurotic father, is on his own mission to save Harvey, whom he believes is the victim of a government conspiracy whereby the mentally ill are released from institutions to undermine the working class. Before the town firemen leave the station to free Harvey with the Jaws of Life, they get called to a major fire. Now Harvey's fucked. And everybody else isn't exactly having a ball, either. Pam and Colleen are having a pre-lover's quarrel. Stan is driving his wife, himself, and the coroner crazy. And Dan, who lost his job because of the fire and dreads having to go back to selling pot, fails to hang himself from the monkey bars. As for Harvey, he becomes abandoned, held captive by the pool table and haunted by a nightmare hosted by Poe himself. Then suddenly, through a series of events involving a black cat and a fireman coming back to life, half the town ends up at the Full Moon-including the rifle-toting Elizabeth. Will Harvey be killed by the woman of his dreams? See the movie and find out. |
